SCIENCE FAIR CANCELLED

Dear Franklin Families,

Unfortunately, we have had a great deal of students who have presented with vomiting, diarrhea or nausea today.  Because of the surge in cases, we are going to cancel the Science Fair tonight.  Instead, tomorrow each classroom will tour the science fair and view all of the projects. This will help inspire all of our students in the area of science and showcase the amazing work our students have done.  We apologize for the last minute notice, but this all came about in the last hour.

Thank you for your understanding.  We hope that we return to normal activities soon!

February PTA Meeting Summary

Eccf-PTA-LogoMissed the PTA Meeting on Thursday? At our February 23rd PTA meeting we welcomed our new Recording Secretary, Karen Arrigo-Hill. Karen was elected by our Executive Board at their last meeting after our previous Recording Secretary, Nikki Kolhoff, resigned.  Thank you to Karen for her willingness to step in for the remainder of the year!

Our Principal Deanna Sinfield presented her Principal’s report.  Franklin continues to enjoy a wonderful school year with many innovative and exciting programs.  Keep your eyes open for our new shade replacements, bulletin boards and tables which should be installed shortly.  Pali Camp was successful and the 5th graders enjoyed the snow.  The district has requested that in order to contain norovirus, we limit the number of activities held on campus, so all field trips and meetings will be cancelled for the next week.  We will continue to update parents as we find out more information.

Our PTA President Megan Histand presented updates about fundraising and membership. Teachers continue submitting for the grants approved by the PTA.  Approved grants so far have included new ipads, Lego Robotics program, classroom reading centers and STEM based classroom experiments. Ask your teacher about how they are using their grant!

The PTA membership approved adding an additional $600 to the Multicultural Committee line item in our budget, bringing their total budget to $1000 (in line with what many other clubs and committees at Franklin receive from the PTA.)  The Multicultural Committee held its first meeting of the year a few weeks ago and has a number of exciting ideas about how to highlight and celebrate diversity at Franklin.

The PTA membership also elected our Nominating Committee. The purpose of the Nominating Committee is to recognize and seek qualified nominees for the elected leadership of the next year’s PTA. The membership elected Chris Pirrone, Samira Poulos, Dana Colwell, Alison Butt, Krista Strauss and Wendy Dembo as an alternate.  Thanks to everyone who nominated themselves to serve on the committee!  It’s wonderful to see so many active members in our PTA.  Read your eblasts in the next week or so to find out more information from the Nominating Committee about applying to serve on the 2017-2018 Executive Board.

Our SMMEF Chair Gabriella Hadley presented an update regarding all SMMEF-related projects.  SMMEF ended its solicitation campaign to parents on January 31st, 2017 with $2,782,118 in donations.  SMMEF has a number of exciting events in the next few months.  The Greg Coote Concert for the Arts is on Saturday, March 11th.  Tickets are available at smmef.org. The SMMEF Wine Auction is Sunday, April 30th.  If you are interested in helping to put together a wine basket for the auction, please continue to check your eblasts for more information.  Also, if you haven’t given yet to SMMEF, please go to www.smmef.org/donate and consider donating any amount that is meaningful to you.

We also heard an update from our Gardening Committee chair, as well as a reminder about our Annual Science Fair on Thursday, March 9th. Our library continues to plan many exciting events with our new librarian Mr. Tse.  Please read the eblast for events coming up soon.  The library is also in need of volunteers.  Consider spending an hour in the library – your help would be greatly appreciated.

Hope to see you at the next PTA meeting on Thursday, March 23rd, 2017 at 6:30 pm in the Cafeteria before the HSA Awards.  If you would like to nominate a community member, a 5th grade parent leaving Franklin, or a current teacher or staff member, look for the yellow sheet that came home in your child’s backpack or download the form here.

December PTA Meeting Summary

Eccf-PTA-Logo

Missed the PTA Meeting on Thursday? At our December 15th PTA meeting our Principal Deanna Sinfield presented her Principal’s report.  Franklin continues to enjoy a wonderful school year with many innovative and exciting programs.  We also look forward to a visit from our new Superintendent, Dr. Ben Drati, who will assume the post on January 1st, 2017.

Our PTA President Megan Histand presented updates about fundraising and membership, as well as a brief overview of the Executive Board meeting.  The Executive Board is drafting a letter to the school district from the Franklin PTA, encouraging the school district to address some of the facilities issues currently facing our school.  Also, our Special Needs Committee will be sending out a survey in early 2017 to assess how to best meet the needs of all families at Franklin.

We heard a presentation from our Budget/Spend Down Committee Chair Alexis Elsea, including a proposal to update a number of facilities-related projects.  After the presentation our membership unanimously voted to approve funds for new sunshades to replace the old and damaged tarps on the structures in the breezeway and along the kinder yards.  It also voted to replace the old outdoor tables under those canopies and throughout the campus.  We will also be purchasing two new enclosed outdoor bulletin boards, one to be posted near the Idaho gate and one near the Montana kinder entrance, in order to help keep our parents more informed about the events and programs at Franklin and the community.  We also voted to approve, as a safety measure and for esthetic purposes, new pole wraps for the basketball courts.  Finally, we voted to approve a special “one-time” grant for our wonderful teachers.  Each teacher can now ask for up to an additional $1,000 to help fund an innovative program or a special project in the classroom.  The PTA is happy to be able to enhance the educational experience of our children at Franklin with all of these improvements!

We heard from the chair of our ByLaws Committee.  We are currently in the process of updating our ByLaws.  We are also revitalizing our Gardening Committee.  If you are interested in helping out with gardening, please contact us at franklinptapresidents.com.

Our SMMEF Chair Gabriella Hadley presented an update on all SMMEF-related projects.  SMMEF is ending its solicitation campaign to parents on January 31st, 2017. If you haven’t given yet, please go to www.smmef.org/donate and consider donating any amount that is meaningful to you.

A big thanks to our Holiday Book Fair co-chairs Kelli Hass and Jessica Levin!  During book fair week (December 12-16th) the cafeteria was transformed into a winter wonderland, children filled their backpacks with new books, and the PTA raised thousands of dollars that will be used to fund even more exciting things for our kids, so stay tuned!

Hope to see you at the next PTA meeting on Tuesday, January 17th, 2017 at 6:30pm in the Cafeteria!  Childcare will be provided.  When school resumes after the winter break, look for the meeting agenda in your inbox via E-blast, on our bulletin board outside Room 3, and on our Facebook page at https://www.facebook.com/franklinschoolsantamonica/  .  Have a safe and wonderful holiday!
