October PTA Meeting Summary

Missed the PTA Meeting on Thursday? At our October 20th PTA meeting, we welcomed Louise Jaffe, Current Chair of the SMC Board of Trustees, and Zina Josephs, President of Friends of Sunset Park, to present “Support” and “Oppose” positions regarding upcoming ballot Measure V.  If you would like to learn more about all of the positions that our State PTA and Local PTA units are supporting, please click here.

Our Principal Deanna Sinfield presented her principal’s report.  She discussed a number of large campus improvement projects the PTA could support. If you would like to find out more about these projects or how we allocate monies raised through the PTA, please join us at out next Budget Meeting on November 14th at 3:15 pm in Room 3.

Our Carnival Chair Eirlys McKenzie discussed our upcoming Carnival.  We still need lots of manpower (that means you Dads!) for our Friday night set-up.  If you are able to help, sign up here.  We also need more Bring-A-Thing boxes.

We also heard from our Parent Ed group.  The program is off to a strong start this year!  Please look for a survey that will be distributed in order to gather feedback about what types of Parent Ed presentations you would like to see.  Our PTA President Megan Histand presented updates about fundraising, membership, the GS/GSH campaign, and purchases that our membership plans to make through our budget funds (including a bulletin board, a color printer and additional teacher supplies.)

A proposal to update our standing rules was presented by Sean Daly.  After discussion, many people attending the meeting felt the proposal would benefit from additional study, so a committee is being formed to work on the proposal before bringing it back to a future PTA meeting.

Due to the Great Shake Out, we ran out of time for the presentation on “Getting to Know Your PTA Budget.”

Hope to see you at the next PTA meeting on Tuesday, November 15th, 2016 at 6:30pm in the Cafetorium.  We will be voting on one of our member’s proposed changes to the standing rules in our Bylaws.  For more information, we will post the complete agenda 10 days before the meeting on the bulletin board outside Room 3, via E-blast and on our Facebook page (search and “like” us @Franklinschoolsantamonica).

September PTA Meeting Summary

Eccf-PTA-LogoMissed the PTA meeting on Tuesday?  At our September 21st PTA meeting, we welcomed members from the SAMOHI orchestra who played for us while we checked in.  Our Principal, Deanna Sinfield, presented her president’s report.  School has been calm and all students and teachers are settling into the new school year. We then discussed “norms” for our PTA meetings.  The goal of these norms is to help our PTA be productive and also make sure we provide a fair environment where all voices are heard.  Some of these norms include setting time limits around discussion items, adopting a civility code for our meetings, and making sure we have procedures in place for an informed membership.  We used the norms as a trial guide for our meeting.

Our association then approved an expenditure for our Kindergarten teachers to replace outdated materials in their classrooms and an additional expense for grade level Rainbow t-shirts.

Our Legislative Chair, Katy Henrikson, presented on measures GS and GSH.  These measures are on the November ballot and have the potential to bring in $8 million annually for our school district.  Upon being asked by the Santa Monica-Malibu PTA Council to consider a donation to the campaign, in August the Franklin PTA Executive Board recommended that our general membership approve $7500.   Jennifer Smith, PTA Council President, John Keene, School Board Member Elect and Michael Soloff, Chair of the Housing Commission joined the meeting to answer general questions from our membership.  After questions and discussion, our association voted to approve the $7500 donation to the GS/GSH campaign.

Our SMMEF chair, Gabriella Hadley, updated the membership about the $100,000 match for any Ed Foundation donations given now through next week’s Pledge Days.  Franklin will host Pledge Days Monday morning, Wednesday morning and Friday morning at both the Montana and Idaho gates.

Discussion began surrounding a proposal to update our Standing Rules, but due to the lateness of the evening, all new business was postponed until our October meeting.

Hope to see you at the next PTA meeting on October 20th, 2016 at 8:40 am in Room 3 for our next PTA meeting.  We will be voting on one of our member’s proposed changes to the standing rules in our by-laws.  For more information, we will post the complete agenda 10 days before the meeting on our bulletin board outside room 3, via e-blast and on our Facebook page.

Update from our Leg Committee on Measures GS and GSH

At our next PTA meeting on September 20, we will be voting on a proposed donation on behalf of the Franklin PTA to the GS and GSH campaign. Please read up HERE on how the The Santa Monica-Malibu PTA Council has unanimously endorsed the GS & GSH Great Schools, Affordable Housing campaign. These measures, if passed, will result in a projected $8 million in funding to our schools annually.

Franklin PTA has been asked to endorse the campaign, donate, and help provide volunteers for two precinct walks and two evenings of pizza and phone banking.  If you are interested in joining these activities with a group from Franklin, on 9/28, please sign up using the Phone Bank Sign-Up Genius button under “Volunteers” tab HERE.

August PTA Meeting Summary

Eccf-PTA-LogoMissed the first PTA meeting of this school year on Tuesday?  We heard from our PTA Council President Jennifer Smith (who oversees all SMMUSD PTAs) about two new local measures (GS and GSH) that will be on the ballot this November .  At the Franklin PTA Executive Board meeting earlier this summer, the board recommended supporting this measure and bringing a $7,500 donation to the campaign before our general membership for a vote.  This campaign has the potential to bring in $8 million dollars to our school district annually via sales tax and is already supported by our PTA Council as well as some of the other schools in our district.  Some of our members also brought points of opposition after some research of their own.  To learn more and hear what people are saying about this measure, both for and against, please read the PTA Council’s Study.

As a membership we decided to put off the vote on this campaign donation until more people can study up on the subject!  We will be voting on these funds at next month’s PTA Meeting on September 20 at 6:30 pm.  Child care will be provided.  Only PTA members who have been active for 30 days can vote at meetings, so if you haven’t signed up to become a PTA member, sign up today and make your voice heard!

We also fielded many questions about the Franklin PTA operating budget.  Attending the monthly meeting is a great way to learn and stay informed!  At our next PTA meeting on September 20th, we will explain in more detail how we use the funds we receive through our PTA Annual Fund, the very popular annual Franklin Carnival, and our other smaller fundraisers throughout the year to fund field trips, classroom supplies, technology and more.

Many committee chairs also presented at Tuesday’s meeting and are in need of volunteers. If you would like to get involved, don’t forget to sign up through the first day packets.  Our volunteer coordinator, Allison, is working hard to find the perfect fit for all volunteers Franklin.  Our children depend so much on the generous time given by all of our volunteers!

Thank you so much to everyone who attended.  Hope to see you at the next PTA meeting on Tuesday, September 20th at 6:30pm in the Cafetorium!
