Welcome to a new year of science! All students in grades K-5 are encouraged to join the Science Club, which meets monthly, 6:30-7:30 pm on a weeknight, or for a weekend daytime off-site outing. Past events have included the Ballona Wetlands, Mad Science’s Gasworks, Destination Science Spooooky Science, Santa Monica College’s Chemistry Club, Franklin dad Brian Tung’s spectacular Star Parties, and more!
The Science Club’s “main event” is the annual Science Fair and we hope all Franklin students will participate, regardless of whether they have attended prior events. This year’s Science Fair will be held on Thursday, February 21, 2012 (drop-offs on February 20). Students who participate in five (5) or more Science Club events AND enter a project in the Science Fair, will receive a Science Trophy or Medal at the last Science Club meeting in May or June 2013. Attendance at Science Club meetings/off-site outings relies on parent participation so drop-offs are not allowed.
So please attend: An informal parent meeting on Monday, September
10, 8:30 am. Please join the Science Club co-chairs at the Cafetorium’s
outdoor lunch tables for an informal meeting where parents can
brainstorm the remaining events for the year. If you have an idea you
would like the Science Club to pursue or you have an idea and would
like to host an event, please come to this meeting! Last year, several
parents joined us and offered to do programs and they were very successful!! Don’t be shy! RSVPs to Erin, Johanna or Julia are encouraged but not necessary.
California Science Center’s The Desert Dome, Oct. 22 varied times
Then, on Monday, October 22, 4:30 to 7:30 pm, we will enter the Desert Dome! We will immerse ourselves into the sights, sounds and smells of the Mojave Desert as we step inside a mobile inflatable dome and learn about ecology, adaptation and desert habitats. Kids will help Uuhuuly, a Kangaroo Rat, find her home and along the way learn about the desert. There will be three 45-minute interactive “shows” scheduled: 4:30 – 5:15, 5:30 – 6:15 and 6:30 – 7:15pm. Sign up for your time slot now!
If you have questions or want to be placed on the Science Club email list, please send your contact information to Julia Miele.
We look forward to a fun and educational year of science!
