Information about Franklin Elementary’s Two Speech/Language Pathologists (SLPs)

Franklin Elementary has two Speech/Language Pathologists (SLPs).  Shannon Bishop, MS, CCC-SLP is a graduate of the University of Redlands.  She has been working in SMMUSD for 17 years and has been the full time SLP at Franklin School for almost a decade.  Kyra Paliobagis Quinones, MS, CCC-SLP graduated from California State University Northridge (CSUN).  She did her student teaching at Franklin and has been working half time at Franklin for the past two years (we share her with SAMOHI).  These two SLPs work with the K-5 students on campus as well as area preschool students who require services.  Although frequently called “Speech Teacher”, they prefer to be called Speech/Language Pathologists or SLPs, for short, to call attention to the fact that they work on more than just speech and are not teachers in the traditional sense.  Speech encompasses articulation, phonology, stuttering, voice disorders and whatever affects the actual sounds of the words being said.  Language refers to syntax, morphology, pragmatic (social) language, semantics, and whatever affects the content of what is being said.  Being a pathologist means that we have the training to assess for and treat various communication disorders.  If you have any questions regarding speech/language or hearing, you can contact us at Franklin:  Shannon Bishop is at extension 62160; sbishop@smmusd.org and Kyra Paliobagis Quinones is at extension 62220; kpaliobagis@smmusd.org.
