Videos from PTA Meeting Oct 4th 2012

Part 1 – School Board Candidates

Six candidates are running for the SMMUSD School Board:
Reform Slate: Craig Foster, Karen Farrer, Seth Jacobson
Incumbents: Ben Allen, Jose Escarce, Maria Leon-Vazquez
Here they introduce themselves and explain why they are running

Part 2 – Election Forum Presentation

Three important legislation on November Ballot that has the potential to significantly impact Franklin: Prop 38, Prop 30, and Bond Measure ES.  Each is presented here:

Election Forum Q and A  (incomplete)

Franklin parents ask for more details and clarifications on Props 38, 30, & ES. Our PTA voted to endorse both Prop 38 and Measure ES.  (We apologize that the last few minutes of the Q&A was cut-off when our camera ran out of memory.)

One note of correction: the ceiling fans in the Cafetorium are paid for by our Franklin parents through PTA, not by Measure BB as Board Member Nimish Patel implied during the meeting (cut off on video).

PTA Comments on LA Times Editorial

PTA Comments on Los Angeles Times Editorial

Proposition 38 “is more focused on pumping money into schools to reduce class sizes, restore instruction in the arts and other subjects that have been lost to budget cuts, and improve classroom technology and update teaching materials.”

That’s what the Los Angeles Times editorial board had to say on Oct. 2, even in writing against the initiative.

While we strongly disagree with the editorial board’s conclusion, by and large the editorial actually identifies key features of Proposition 38 that we believe separate it from Proposition 30 – and make Proposition 38 the true education initiative.

Read our response here.
