Earthquakes! By SMC, City of Santa Monica Emergency Services, SOS Survival Products, and Adventure 16: Tuesday, January 14, 6:30 to 7:30 pm, Cafetorium
Living in California? Let’s learn about earthquakes! SMC Geology program faculty and students will be on hand to facilitate fun earthquake activities, such as simulation of different types of earthquake waves and intensities! City of Santa Monica Emergency Services will then give us a run down on the most important safety tips to remember. The event will end with the opportunity for everyone to purchase earthquake supplies and emergency survival kits from SOS Survival Products and Adventure 16 – a percentage of all sales benefiting Franklin!

Mark your calendars for Monday, October 21, 6:30 pm in the cafetorium, when we will be amazed by the Wildlife Learning Center’s North American Wildlife Show, which will feature the coatimundi (What the heck is a coatimundi?, North American porcupine, owl, fox, prairie dog, red-tailed hawk, American alligator, king snake, and the California desert tortoise – truly amazing, right?!?!? The Wildlife Learning Center rescues wildlife and provides outreach and onsite education in wildlife biology. The Center is located in Sylmar, CA where more than 70 different species of rescued and zoo-born wild animals call this shady, natural environment home.

Don’t Miss “Waterology” by Shows That Teach on Tuesday, September 17, 6:30 pm, Cafetorium
Now for the really fun stuff! Mark your calendars for our first Science Club Event, which will take place on Tuesday, September 17, 6:30 pm in the cafetorium. Waterology is an energetic musical show about water science, runoff and water conservation. Students will be interactively involved with songs, competitions, call-and-response skits and comedy to make every moment fun, funny and educational. Concepts covered include: water is vital for living things; water should not be wasted; the water cycle; storm drain pollution; gravity’s effect on water; H2O is hydrogen and oxygen; and more! Don’t miss out!

Join us for an informal parent meeting on Tuesday, September 10, 8:45 am, Lunch Tables
Please join the Science Club co-chairs at the Cafetorium’s outdoor lunch tables for an informal meeting where parents can brainstorm the new events for the year. If you have an idea and would like to host an event, please come to this meeting! Last year, several parents hosted programs and they were very successful, so don’t be shy! RSVPs to Erin, Johanna or Julia are encouraged but not necessary.
