Our mission is to educate Franklin about sustainability and support the implementation of the district's sustainability plan. Our goal is to enable learning opportunities that allow students to develop an understanding and passion for the environment and all living systems.
The committee provides tools for students, educators, and families to face current environmental problems and do their part to protect the future of the environment while educating the next generation of environmental stewards.
There is a wide range of fun activities and always need help from parents to make things happen.
Waste Warrior Program: Waste Sorting
There are opportunities for all availability, interest, and skill levels. Franklin’s Waste Warrior program is part of a district-wide approach to minimize waste sent to landfills, save resources, serve as an educational tool and encourage project-based learning. This continuous effort between students, faculty, staff, and parents teaches proper waste sorting into liquids, compost/organic bin, recycling, and landfill bin. Preserving bin space by stacking lunch trays and Reducing food waste by recovering unopened/ uneaten food that is donated to the community.
Campus Beautification
Franklin comes together as a community 1-2 times year and gives some much needed TLC to every table, wall, and garden bed in our students' sacred learning space. Our kids deserve a beautiful campus!
Gardening Club
We are looking for you and your green thumbs to cultivate and grow this group and every plant and mind at Franklin! If you enjoy fresh air, getting your hands in the dirt, pollinators and project based teaching - consider sharing your love of the garden with our students! When it’s time for the kids to pick a bouquet or taste a school-grown salad, the fruits of your labor will be more than a successful crop of veggies and blooms! Ideas on how to better use our green spaces and assist our teachers with their classroom gardens are welcome. Currently only fully vaccinated volunteers are permitted on the outdoor campus spaces.
Community Costume Swap
This fun October annual event brings the community together to practice the most valuable lesson of Reduce - Reuse. Kids learn to part with their unused, unwanted costumes and props and find themselves a “new to you” costume. The Costume Swap helps keep resources out of landfills and engages our community in the spirit of sharing.
Community Electronic Waste Round-Up
Each year in California, hundreds of thousands of computers, monitors, cellphones, printers, televisions, and other electronic items become "obsolete" in the eyes of consumers, accelerating the generation of electronic waste. Many components of electronic equipment-including metals, plastic, and glass can be recycled, while others may present environmental hazards if not managed correctly (thrown to the landfill). At Franklin, this annual community roundup in collaboration with trusted partners makes sure our E-waste gets the opportunity of a second life by helping local communities in need. If impossible to Reuse, the items get recycled to the maximum or disposed of responsibly, keeping our environment safe.
