Literacy & Education Committee

The literacy and education committee oversees various educational programs to help enrich our students’ curriculum while involving parents, guardians, and caregivers in the Franklin community. Volunteer opportunities include leading or joining committees: Book Fair Committee, Library Volunteer, Multicultural Fair Committee,  Science Club, Reflections and Parent Ed.

Get involved with the Literacy & Education Committee:

Parent Education

The committee provides speakers and educational resources to Franklin families concerning topics relevant to parenting elementary-aged children, including race and equality, anxiety, and technology. The committee is responsible for choosing topics for the academic year, contacting and scheduling speakers, and promoting the event to the Franklin community.

Science Club

The science committee supports the Franklin science curriculum with monthly events for all grade levels. The committee works to curate the after-school Science Club Nights while broadly considering science. The committee chairs contact experts in various fields (often targeting parents if possible) and design individual events to provide new knowledge about topics in practical ways.

Reflections

This National PTA-sponsored art program calls upon students to create dance, film, literature, music, photographic or visual arts pieces around an annual theme. The committee is responsible for disseminating rules and guidelines for entry. Students must submit their artwork on Friday, October 11 by 3pm. The committee and a panel of judges will review all submissions and award participants at the annual Reflections awards night on Thursday, November 14 at 6pm . The committee is also responsible for getting all first-place entries to move onto districtwide, regional, state and even national Reflection competitions! PTA's Reflections program provides opportunities for recognition and access to the arts which boost student confidence and success in the arts and in life!

Library

Working with Franklin’s librarian, Mr. Tse, the committee coordinates parent volunteers to help in the library on a weekly basis. The committee hosts two Book Cafe events a year that happen before school, adjacent to the library. The committee organizes parents to help with special in-library activities for holidays such as Halloween drawing or Valentine coloring. The committee runs the Poem in a Pocket event in April.

Multicultural Fair

This annual event allows families to bring unity and awareness of different cultures at Franklin Elementary. This is a beloved event at our school where families have the opportunity to share customs and traditions through activities such as art, food, songs, dance, and more.

Book Fair

The PTA holds two Book Fairs, a week-long holiday fair in December, and a “Pop-Up” fair in the spring for two days. Book fair chairs organize, promote, and run the annual book fairs, working closely with Scholastic. The committee also works to secure a guest speaker or author to address the student body. These events rely on numerous volunteers to help it run efficiently, from creating signs to decorate and promote the fair, manning the store and registers to helping teachers with their classroom wish lists.
