Have you heard about the Math Olympiad

Okay 4th & 5th Graders, have you heard about the Math Olympiad yet? This year five of our fourth and fifth graders will have an Enrichment Opportunity Sponsored by Franklin’s PTA to compete in the E = MC2 (Excellence in Math, Culver City) Tournament, with the possibility of a second qualifying team of 5 students. The event will take place Saturday, April 22 at Linwood Howe Elementary School in Culver City.

Qualifying Test: Tuesday, January 24th 7:40am – 8:25am

  • Room 32 for 4th graders

  • Room 37 for 5th graders

As a first step, all interested students should review the attached sample questions to get an idea of the type and level of questions that will be asked. (Answers are also provided.) These problems do not need to be turned in; they are simply for practice and review.

The Qualifying Test consists of 10 math problems to be solved within a 30-minute time period. Students with the top 30 scores will be invited to attend a series of training classes focused on problem solving. These classes will take place on Tuesdays & Thursdays, 7:40 –8:25am. Attendance is mandatory.

After several weeks of the training classes, these 30 students will take a second Qualifying Test. The scores from this test will determine which 5 “mathletes” will represent Franklin at the E = MC2 Tournament on April 22nd.

We are excited about this unique learning opportunity! Please contact your child’s teacher if you have any specific questions.

Sincerely,

Ms. Helphand & Ms. Silhavy
